Web Design: Comparing Quotes and Pricing
Every design company or freelance designer is different. There are a number of ways to quote a web site design. Below are three typical methods which you will find and some information to help you out when dealing with someone using these types of price quoting.
Time and Materials
This means you are charged for the billable time and any material costs. Often the material costs are low, however billable time can be very expensive, especially if the client makes changes during development. Make sure you know the billable rate for all people on the project, and set a limit so the designer must talk to you before they continue doing any work. Good design firms may ask for you to sign a change order form so all parties are aware of any price increases that may occur from implementing these changes.
Fixed Price
This is the safest way to guarantee your site will not go up in cost at all! Be sure to get a written document that explains exactly what will be delivered to ensure both you and the designer understand the requirements here. Changes to the project during development will generally lead to a new fixed price quote for the proposed changes, and will be tacked on to the original cost of the project itself.
Component Pricing
This type of pricing allows the client to see the components or modules that will comprise the web site, such as a form or a search script, before purchasing. Often, these quotes are priced a la cart, which allows the client to understand how much it will cost to add an additional page or function in the future if so desired.
Upfront costs
Remember when working with a design company or frellance designers it is not uncommon for developers to ask for anywhere from 30% to 50% of the cost of the project upfront. The remaining balance is then usually paid after launching the site or upon receiving your final product.
